WALKER — Florida Boulevard east of Walker was closed for almost seven hours Thursday after a wreck spilled diesel fuel and debris on the roadway, Police Chief Hunter Grimes said.

A Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development dump truck traveling west and a loaded log truck going east collided about 9 a.m. just west of Sunland Drive, Grimes said.

“It appears that the DOTD truck veered into oncoming traffic and hit the log truck head-on,” Grimes said.

Both vehicles suffered “major damage,” Grimes said.

Firefighters were called to help extract the drivers from the wreckage, he said.

The drivers of the trucks were taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, Grimes said.

The debris and diesel fuel over the site, prompted authorities to close the road, Grimes said.

Livingston Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness and DOTD crews assisted in the cleanup, Grimes said.

Drivers were asked to detour to Interstate 12 using Walker South Road, La. 449 or Satsuma Road, Grimes said.

Florida Boulevard was reopened to traffic around 4 p.m. Thursday, Grimes said.
