A Ponchatoula man was arrested over Labor Day weekend after allegedly boating while drunk, fleeing law enforcement and holing up in a bathroom with a rifle.
Saturday night, state Wildlife and Fisheries agents were patrolling the South Pass near Manchac when they were passed by a boat with no running lights, according to a news release from the agency.
The agents stopped the vessel and towed it to a fuel dock to perform a field sobriety test on operator Matthew B. Saltzman, 42. But after the test, he jumped into the water and escaped.
The following day, agents learned he was at his uncle’s camp near the South Pass after his relative found him in the bathroom with a rifle. Family members were able to talk him into putting the gun down and surrendering, the release states.
Saltzman was arrested on one count each of fourth-offense DWI, flight from an officer, simple escape, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and operating a watercraft under a suspended license, as well as three boating safety violations.
