A 64-year-old Independence man was killed in a wreck with a garbage truck Tuesday morning on La. 442 in Tangipahoa Parish, State Police report.
The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. Killed in the accident was Edward W. Stewart.
Stewart was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado on the state highway when he crashed into the rear of the garbage truck driven by Christi Davis, of Kentwood, which had stopped to collect garbage.
The reason why Stewart, who was not wearing his seat belt, collided with the back of the truck remains under investigation, State Police report.
Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.
Joel Nathaniel Figueroa, 33, of Hammond, was collecting garbage at the rear of the truck and was seriously injured when the accident occurred. He as taken to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Air-Med in critical condition.
Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in this crash, but blood samples were taken from both drivers as part of the crash investigation. The samples will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
