Two men died on Tangipahoa Parish roads a half-hour apart on Thursday morning.

Shortly after 9 a.m., 68-year-old Bobby Joe Benson, of Winfield, Alabama, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer east on Interstate 12 near the Pumpkin Center Road exit when he drove into the center median and hit a barrier and a light pole, State Police wrote in a news release.

Benson was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, but troopers don’t believe the crash killed him. They are investigating whether a medical condition could have caused the wreck.

Elsewhere, James Pittman, 64, was riding a 2012 Harley-Davidson east on La. 38 near Interstate 55. About 9:30 a.m., he was riding behind another driver who slowed down to make a turn. Pittman, of Kentwood, was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the car before traveling into the oncoming lane, where he was struck head-on by another vehicle. He was wearing a helmet but was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.

Troopers do not suspect that any of the three motorists were impaired.
