A man suspected of drinking died late Saturday when a car he was driving drifted off Interstate 10 east in St. Tammany Parish and slammed into an interstate sign support, State Police said.

Curtis Cameron, 28, Hattiesburg, Miss., drove the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis off the interstate at 10:30 p.m. about a half mile south of the junction of interstates 10, 12 and 59, Trooper Nicholas Manale said in a news release.

After the car hit a Department of Transportation and Development sign support, it stopped in the median between the I-10 east guardrail and the sign support post, Manale’s release says.

A front-seat passenger, Katrina Cameron, 28, also of Hattiesburg, suffered serious injuries, the release says.

The woman was wearing a seatbelt, but Curtis Cameron was not the release says.

Because Cameron was suspected of drinking, a sample of his blood was sent to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for analysis, the release says.
