A Livingston Parish government employee was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest early Tuesday morning on a count of drunken driving while in a parish vehicle, officials said.

State Police arrested Shevis Ball, 49, of Denham Springs, about 1:30 a.m., after Ball wrecked the truck in a single-vehicle crash on La. 16, south of La. 63, Trooper 1st Class Bryan Lee said Tuesday afternoon.

Ball was arrested on counts of driving while intoxicated and careless operation, Lee said.

Parish President Layton Ricks said Ball will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Ball works for the parish in several capacities, including responding to sewer complaints, working as a liaison to Waste Management and, more recently, helping manage parish facilities.

Ricks said parish employees who are issued parish vehicles may use them when they are on-call, but Ball “was absolutely off work yesterday.”

“I spoke briefly with him a couple minutes ago, but he was still a bit sleepy or groggy,” Ricks said late Tuesday afternoon. “I think he may have broken his wrist. I said we’ll talk tomorrow.”
