LIVINGSTON - A two-car collision claimed the life of an Independence man late Wednesday, according to a State Police news release.

Zeferino Flores, 21, was driving east on La. 442 north of Livingston just before 9 p.m. when his Chevrolet Suburban collided with a pickup truck driven by Keith Owens, 19, also of Independence, after Owens crossed the center line into Flores’ path, State Trooper Russell Graham said in the news release.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt and both suffered serious injuries, Graham said.

Both men were taken to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where Flores died, Graham said.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol use was a factor in the crash, but samples of both drivers’ blood were sent to the State Police Crime Laboratory for analysis, Graham said.
