A Denham Springs man wanted in the Monday night shooting that killed one person and wounded another was arrested at his residence Tuesday afternoon.
Police booked Brian K. Allen, 24, 614 Florida Ave., Apartment D, into the Denham Springs City Jail on counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm, Detective Glenn Lemoine said. Allen will be transferred to the Livingston Parish Detention Center.
Derick Stewart, of Walker, died Monday night of injuries sustained in the shooting on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Lemoine said. An autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning.
It was the city’s first homicide of the year, Lemoine said.
Stewart and another man were shot multiple times in the incident, which began about 7 p.m. Monday. Detectives were questioning Allen on Tuesday afternoon, but had not determined a motive for the shooting.
Detectives searched Allen’s apartment and vehicle Tuesday but did not recover the gun used in the shooting, Lemoine said.
The victims had been visiting a home on Maryland Street on Monday evening and were leaving when Allen confronted them and an argument ensued, Lemoine said.
Allen tried to use his vehicle to block Stewart and the other victim, whom authorities have not identified, from leaving in their car, Lemoine said.
Stewart managed to back his car down Maryland Street, with Allen following, and turned east on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Allen then stepped out of his vehicle and opened fire on Stewart’s car, hitting both Stewart and his passenger, Lemoine said.
Stewart tried to drive away but struck a parked car down the road. He and the other victim then fled on foot toward Pete’s Highway, where both men collapsed from their injuries, Lemoine said. The other shooting victim is expected to live, Lemoine said.
