A high school football player who died after being injured during a game last week suffered a neck fracture, Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirmed Wednesday.
The death of freshman Tyrell Cameron has been ruled an accident, the sheriff said.
Cameron was a starter on the Franklin Parish High School’s punt coverage team. During a punt in the fourth quarter of a game last Friday, he was hit by an opponent and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators have found no evidence that would suggest Cameron’s equipment was broken or ill-fitting, Cobb said.
He called the teenager’s death a tragedy that has affected not only Cameron’s family, but the school and entire community.
Cameron’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
