A pickup truck traveling south on Interstate 55 in Hammond left the road, crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes, setting off a three-vehicle crash Wednesday evening that left the driver dead, police said.
Eduardo Munoz-lachino, 24, of Tickfaw, the driver of the truck, was critically injured in the crash and pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, State Police said in a news release.
Munoz-lachino was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup southbound on I-55 shortly after 6:30 p.m. when, crossing over the median, the truck crashed into the left front of a 2014 Acura SUV driven by Walter E. Shockley, 63, of Springfield, State Police said.
Munoz-lachino’s vehicle continued southbound in the northbound lanes before crashing head-on into a 2016 Volvo 18-wheeler driven by John Dewan McKeller, 60, of Mobile, Alabama, State Police said.
Crash scene investigators determined Munoz-lachino was unrestrained at the time of the crash.
Shockley and McKeller were both properly restrained, and both were treated and released for minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Blood samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, State Police said.
