DENHAM SPRINGS — At least 36 cars were burglarized and one vehicle stolen early Monday in two adjacent subdivisions near Denham Springs.
A host of items disappeared from the cars parked by homes in the Westminster Estates and Forest Ridge subdivisions, including GPS devices, credit cards, wallets and sports equipment, said Lori Steele, a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
At least one home surveillance system captured footage that may show two burglars.
Crystal Williams, 43, who lives on Windsor Avenue in the Westminster subdivision, said her cameras recorded two men trying to open a car door in her driveway at 3:37 a.m. Monday. They stopped and walked away after one of them noticed a camera, she said.
Williams was not surprised by the break-ins — they were only the most recent in a series of property crimes over the past few years. Her husband’s truck window was smashed last year, and they found the dashboard broken apart and robbed of its speakers and a navigation system. She bought the surveillance system soon afterward. A neighbor down the street also had a gun stolen from her car more than a year ago.
“(A break-in) happens often enough, and I’m not worried ’cause I have cameras all around,” Williams said.
Residents of the spacious homes in the upscale Forest Ridge subdivision had not changed their behavior overnight — cars parked in front of two different homes had windows rolled down on Wednesday afternoon, and several homes had their garages left wide open.
The stolen car was a 2008 black Toyota FJ Cruiser with a white top, and Louisiana license plate RYU 025, Steele said.
