Man dies when car plunges into Tangipahoa River; driver booked _lowres

One man is dead and another in jail after a car plunged into the Tangipahoa River Monday night.

Deputies were called at 11 p.m. to the area of Lee’s Landing in Ponchatoula, where they found a 1992 Dodge Stealth sunken in the water, according to a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office news release.

Driver Devon T. Norred, 19, escaped the vehicle and told rescue crews his friend was still trapped inside. Firefighters swam to the car but were unable to reach passenger Devon Harris, 20, according to the release.

When the vehicle was pulled out with a tow truck, crews found Harris’ body, deputies wrote.

Norred was arrested on one count each of vehicular homicide, careless operation, and driving while intoxicated, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The hometowns were not listed in the release for Norred or Harris.
