Council begins fall art classes
Pumpkin-making classes hosted by the Arts Council of Livingston Parish will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Participants will create pumpkins out of construction paper and recycled tissue paper holders. The class is limited to 10 people, ages 4 and up. The cost is $10.
A pumpkin-decorating class or youth in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will be from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 15. The class is limited to 10. The cost is $10.
Wood Working class and Scrolling Along will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 or Oct. 19. Classes are limited to four people ages 18 and up. The cost is $25.
To register for classes, call the Arts Council of Livingston Parish at (225) 664-1168 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7017 of Denham Springs and the Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor several contests at parish schools.
The Voice of Democracy contest is open to ages nine through 12. Students are asked to type and tape a three- to five-minute essay on the theme, “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military.” The deadline is Nov. 1.
For Patriots for Pen, students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades are asked to type a 300-400 word essay on “Are You Proud of Your Country?” The deadline is Nov. 1.
The third contest requires students in ninth though 12th grades to paint a patriotic picture. The deadline is March 31.

The American Patriotism contest includes four categories for students in kindergarten to fifth grade. The deadline is Nov. 1. For more information, call Auxiliary President Vi Singleton at (225) 665-1201.
The Main Street Denham Springs Holiday Chef’s Evening and Wine Tasting Event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 1.
Chefs, located in shops in the Antique District, will prepare special foods. Wine will be provided by Republic National Distributing Company.
Tickets are sold in advance only and are $25 per person. They will be available at Taste of LA Café, 105 N. Range Ave., Denham Springs at 9 a.m. Oct 29. Only 300 tickets will be sold. All proceeds benefit Main Street Denham Springs.
Spotlight Theater in conjunction with the Arts Council of Livingston Parish will debut “Steel Magnolias” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Suma Hall, 28975 S. Satsuma Road, Livingston.
Performances also will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 13. The 2 p.m. performance features a wedding reception with the cast.

Friday and Saturday performances are $20. Tickets for Sunday’s performance are $30. Proceeds from Sunday’s performance will help employ additional art teachers in Livingston Parish.
