A pedestrian was gravely injured after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a street in Hammond on Tuesday.
Witnesses said the man, identified as 59-year-old Terry Stewart, was walking on the sidewalk on North Cherry Street about 12:30 p.m., city police wrote in a news release. Stewart began to cross at the intersection of East Thomas Street when he was hit by a westbound vehicle driving on East Thomas Street.
Police said the unnamed driver appeared to have had a green light at the time of the crash.
Stewart was taken to North Oaks Hospital where he was listed in serious condition Tuesday. The police investigation of the case is ongoing.
