AMITE — A man is accused of manslaughter in connection with an early morning shooting that left another man dead, police said Wednesday.

Jeremy Brown, 25, 300 W. Pine St., Amite, was arrested just after midnight when a police officer heard shots and found Brown running from the scene of a shooting on South 2nd Street, said Police Chief Jerry Trabona.

Barry R. Bates, 37, of Independence, had been shot once, Trabona said.

Brown was arrested and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on a count of manslaughter, Trabona said.

A Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office police dog located a .45-caliber handgun detectives believe to have been used in the shooting, Trabona said.

Police were still interviewing witnesses Wednesday morning, Trabona said.

The killing was the first in Amite since July 2007, Trabona said.
