HAMMOND — A 72-year-old Hammond woman and her 97-year-old mother were killed Saturday in a crash on La. 1064 at Rufus Bankston Road, State Police reported late Saturday.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. when Rita Adams, 72, turned west after stopping at a stop sign from Rufus Bankston Road on to La. 1064, State Police said in a news release.
The 2012 Toyota Camry she was driving was struck on the driver’s side by a 2004 GMC Sierra driven by William Holton, 30, also of Hammond, the release states.
Adams and her mother, Myrtis Jones, 97, were transported to a local hospital where both were pronounced dead. Holton and his front seat passenger suffered minor injuries, the release states.
State Police said all of the vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash based on an initial investigation.
State Police also issued reminder in the release for motorists to always make sure it is clear before they pulling into traffic or across intersections and to gauge the distance that vehicles are covering as they approach.
