The driver of an 18-wheeler was hospitalized Monday after a collision with a southbound Amtrak train at the Diamond B Construction crossing near Amite, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that a preliminary investigation found that the driver of the truck failed to yield for the train and the train struck the driver’s side door of the truck, ejecting the driver. The driver, whose name has not been released, was reported in stable condition at a local hospital.

All 193 Amtrak passengers were assessed, with no injuries reported, before being taken by four charter buses to New Orleans, sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said Monday afternoon. The buses were provided by the Tangipahoa Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.

Even though the crash occurred at the intersection of the railroad line with a private drive at about 1:30 p.m., officials were forced to close U.S. 51 north of McMichael Church Road in both directions while the scene was cleared.
