AMITE - An Amite man is accused of manslaughter Wednesday after an early-morning altercation left another man dead, Amite City police said.

Jeremy Brown, 25, 300 W. Pine St., Amite, was arrested just after midnight after a police officer heard shots and found Brown running from the scene on South 2nd Street, said Jerry Trabona, Amite City chief of police.

Barry R. Bates, 37, of Independence, had been shot once, Trabona said.

Brown was arrest and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on manslaughter, Trabona said.

A police dog unit from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office located a .45-caliber handgun detectives believe to have been used in the shooting, Trabona said.

Police were still interviewing witnesses, Trabona said.

The killing was the first in Amite City since July 2007, Trabona said.
