Walker police arrested a transient Denham Springs man Friday in a string of Christmas Eve car burglaries and an attempted car burglary.

Robert A. Ellis Jr., 33, was identified from home surveillance video that captured images of an attempted car burglary in Walker, Capt. John Sharp said. Ellis later admitted to police that he was the person in the video.

Missing from the vehicles was a purse, $500 in cash and another $500 in endorsed checks, Sharp said.

Investigators determined Ellis was “somewhat of a transient” who didn’t maintain a permanent residence and had outstanding warrants in Denham Springs, so authorities there were notified of Walker’s interest in him as a suspect, Sharp said.

Denham Springs police found Ellis sleeping in a car parked in a parking lot and, after identifying him, found various illegal drugs in the car with him. Denham Springs police arrested Ellis on counts of possession of Schedules I-IV narcotics, then notified Walker police he was in custody.

Ellis faces three counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, one count of attempted burglary of a motor vehicle and criminal trespass stemming from the Walker incidents, Sharp said.

Ellis remained in the Livingston Parish Detention Center in lieu of $121,000 bail Friday.

Sharp noted that additional charges against Ellis are possible, and he remains under investigation.
