TICKFAW — Christopher Edwards, the brother of Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, died in a car crash in Tickfaw on Friday, sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto confirmed.
“It’s a tragic incident for any family,” Panepinto said. “Our hearts and our prayers go out to the sheriff and his family.”
Christopher Edwards, 48, of Roseland, died in a head-on crash on La. 442 about 1 mile west of Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish about 6 p.m., State Police spokesman Trooper Nick Manale said in a news release.
Edwards was driving his 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck west on La. 442 when he drifted left across the centerline of the road and entered into an oncoming travel lane, Manale said. It is unknown why Edwards drifted left.
Edwards collided with a UPS delivery truck traveling east, Manale said. Both vehicles received severe damage.
Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office, Manale said.
It is unknown at this time if Edwards was wearing a seatbelt or if he was impaired, Manale said. Toxicology results are still pending.
The driver of the UPS truck — John Burleson, 65, of Hammond — was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries, Manale said. He is not suspected to have been impaired, Manale said.
