WALKER — An accident involving two 18-wheelers and a pickup left one man dead and traffic snarled on Interstate 12 for 2? hours Tuesday afternoon, police said.
John Ponthieu, 57, 33632 Perkins Road, Denham Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene after his westbound pickup struck two tractor-trailer rigs, said Capt. Marliam Lee, of the Walker Police Department.
Ponthieu was westbound when he changed lanes and his 2009 Nissan pickup struck the right front corner of a westbound 18-wheeler, Lee said.
Ponthieu lost control of the pickup, crossed the median and ran into the path of an eastbound FedEx Freight Services truck, according to Lee, who said the accident occurred around 12:20 p.m.
The FedEx was driven by Lynn Martin, 48, of Port Arthur, Texas, police said.
No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, and no one other than Ponthieu was injured, Lee said.
The police captain said no charges have been filed in the case.
Eastbound traffic was blocked on I-12 until nearly 3 p.m., according to Ronnie Cotton, director of the Livingston Parish 911 Center.
Traffic was routed around the accident scene from the Juban Road exit of I-12 to U.S. 190, Lee said.
Westbound traffic was slowed by the accident, but wasn’t blocked, authorities said.
