GREENSBURG — St. Helena Parish’s new director of emergency preparedness will attend her first hurricane preparedness conference in June.

Interim Director Rita Allen, who was appointed to the position April 23, received Police Jury approval Tuesday night to attend the Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Association’s 2013 Gulf States Hurricane Conference in New Orleans.

The conference is scheduled for June 10-14.

Allen, who formerly served as the parish tourist commission’s office manager, was appointed interim director of St. Helena’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness following the departure of former OEP Director Jessica Strickland.

Strickland resigned from the post effective March 22. She did not give a reason for her departure.

Allen said she has already reported to the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and met with representatives for Region 9, which includes St. Helena, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany and Washington parishes.

Her first few weeks on the job have been spent working on grants and meeting with state officials concerning debris removal and building damage sustained during Hurricane Isaac, as well as other ongoing projects, she said.
