An accused kidnapper now faces a count of aggravated rape in a January incident involving a woman and a toddler, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
A woman told investigators she and her 2-year-old child were abducted at gunpoint from the Dollar General at 39578 La. 16 in Denham Springs on Jan. 24. When the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office first reported the case last month, they said they were investigating the incident as a possible rape.
In a Tuesday news release, the office said “investigators have recovered evidence to support the victim’s story.”
Charles A. Smith, 28, 52118 La. 16, remains in the Livingston Parish Detention Center. He faces one count each of aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated kidnapping of a child as well as two counts of false imprisonment. The Sheriff’s Office has previously said Smith had an outstanding warrant for rape in Tangipahoa Parish when he was arrested.
Deputies believe the alleged rape in January happened in Tangipahoa Parish, though the Livingston Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigating because the case began there.
