A Loranger man was arrested Thursday after police found drugs, needles and an apple pipe used to smoke marijuana in his car while it was parked in the Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse lot, the Amite Police Department reported.

To Chief Jerry Trabona, the most curious item was the apple, which he said had been bitten and hollowed out to make a pipe.

“I’ve been doing this for 32 years, and I ain’t never heard of that,” he said. “I don’t know if (the marijuana) is apple-flavored or what.”

In addition to marijuana, officers found crystal methamphetamine and prescription drugs in the car of Matthew Richard Bensemon, 34, Trabona said.

A courthouse deputy called the Police Department about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, asking police to check on a vehicle parked outside, the chief said.

When officers arrived, Bensemon allowed them to search the car, where they found the drugs and paraphernalia, he continued. Bensemon was at the courthouse because his wife had business in juvenile court.

Bensemon was booked into the jail on one count each of possession of a Schedule I drug, possession of a Schedule II drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also faces one count of assault on a child care worker after making a call to child protective services and threatening an employee the day before, Trabona said.
