A Mississippi woman died in a head-on crash after driving the wrong way on Interstate 55 near Hammond early Tuesday morning, according to State Police.

About 1 a.m., 53-year-old Donna I. James, of Macon, Mississippi, was driving a Nissan Altima north in a southbound lane when her car collided with a pickup. James, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained “severe injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the State Police news release.

The driver of the pickup, who was wearing a seat belt, had “moderate injuries” and was taken to a hospital for treatment, State Police said.

Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash but have sent blood samples to the state crime lab for analysis, according to the news release.
