KENTWOOD — Searchers on the ground and in the air hunted an accused rapist Friday who fled from Washington Parish sheriff’s deputies and disappeared into a wooded area near Kentwood, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday.

By late in the day, the focus of the search had moved toward Mississippi, said Dawn Panepinto, a spokeswoman for the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office.

The fugitive, Kaunda Lopaz Magee, 36, is wanted on warrants for aggravated rape, kidnapping, criminal damage to property and four counts of attempted murder of a police officer, Panepinto said.

Several law enforcement agencies joined in the search, including the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, Franklinton Police Department, Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department, and others, Panepinto said.

Magee escaped around 4 p.m. Thursday, Panepinto said.
