Two Amite parents have been arrested after their 4-year-old child took a loaded gun to school Friday morning, police have said.

The child took a .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol from his mother’s car and put it in his backpack, Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona said.

He said the boy did not plan to fire the gun and may not even have realized it was a real firearm. The 4-year-old showed it to another student, who told a teacher. The teacher took the weapon away, and a school administrator at Amite Elementary called the police about 11 a.m.

The gun never discharged.

Police arrested the child’s parents Kenisha Steptoe, 30, and Kenji Steptoe, 37, on one count each of child desertion, Trabona said. The chief said the count was appropriate because the parents were not paying attention when the child got his hands on the weapon.
