Former Livingston Parish School Board member Louis Carlisle died Wednesday morning, Livingston Parish school officials confirmed.
Carlisle, 82, also served as principal and head football coach at Denham Springs High School and as head coach of Assumption High School where he took the Mustangs to a state championship.
Carlisle moved from Assumption High to Denham Springs High School in 1965 and served there as head football coach until 1974.
He became principal at Denham Springs High School in 1975 and remained in that post until May of 1985, said current principal Kelly Jones.
He was elected to the Livingston Parish School Board the following year and served as a board member until the end of last year when he chose not to run again.
“He was my mentor and a very positive influence and role model,” said Bill Spear, superintendent of Livingston Parish Schools.
Spear said he played football for Carlisle for three years at Denham Springs High School before Carlisle became principal.
“He was the guy who handed me my diploma,” Spear said.
Carlisle’s granddaughter, Leah Smith, said her grandfather had played golf on Saturday morning and had a hearth attack on Saturday night. Carlisle died Wednesday morning.
