Michael Varnado of Hammond was found guilty Thursday of manslaugther in the February 2007 killing of his girlfriend Juana Roberts, 20, and of second-degree murder in the subsequent fire deaths of Mykell Roberts, 1, and Demetrios Collier, Jr., 2 months.

Second degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without possibility of probation, parole or release.

District Attorney Scott Perrilloux had said he planned to seek the death penalty if Varnado was convicted of first-degree murder.
