Spring 2018 football recap: Donaldsonville Tigers

The Donaldsonville Tigers went through a spirited 10 days of spring football, culminating with a hard-fought scrimmage with Baton Rouge’s Tara High School.

“We have a lot of new faces and we are starting from scratch,” coach Brian Richardson said.

Gone are Tahj Brown, who is set to play college ball at the University of Houston; Davon Wright, who is headed to  Tulane; and Jaylen Williams, set to play at Blinn Community College; plus several starters from a strong senior class that led the Tigers to a playoff victory.

“Replacing those seniors is a difficult task, but our staff is up to the challenge,” Richardson said.

Tigers fans will certainly need a roster in the fall with so many new faces on the team.

“We are looking for leadership and it will come from different guys,” Richardson said.

The quarterback position is typically a leadership spot and vying for the position will be sophomore Josh Collier and freshman Treyvon Brown.

“It’s nip and tuck right now, will keep evaluating them into the fall,” Richardson said.

One player who is returning with experience is Christian “Muppetbaby” Bell, a dangerous runner with track speed who will be the focus of most opponents. Some other names to watch are wide receiver Jeffrey Johnson, corner Savon Landry, Dandre Johnson, running back Raeland Johnson and Tyrese Ester.

The Tigers lost the entire starting offensive line but do return Willie Picou, Rashad Millien and Jalen Winchester.

“We lost some leaders on that line. Young guys must step up,” Richardson said.

The Tigers’ spring game with Tara was a “freshman theme” as the Tigers started several eighth-graders. The spring was a learning experience for the young Tigers squad and Richardson knows they will improve.

“Lining up correctly, knowing our terminology and applying what they have been taught -- that is success, to me,” Richardson said.
