Sheriff Jeff Wiley and his staff at Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office dressed in purple, the color for domestic violence awareness, on Aug. 20 to honor the life of Monica Johnson, a Geismar woman who was beaten to death on Aug. 9.

Johnson’s husband, David, was arrested in her murder.

Wiley asked each employee to donate $5 to give to the surviving victims, Johnson’s two sons, to help offset future expenses. The APSO raised more than $1,000, according to a news release.

The APSO Domestic Violence division has worked 269 cases dealing with domestic violence incidents since January.

The Sheriff’s Office also holds a dress down day in October for domestic violence awareness, which is observed nationally.
