Two St. Amant High School students are learning about more than history, math and English.

Carolina Carbajal Ascenico, of Mexico, and Belgium native Laurane Spaens are attending the school as part of an international student exchange program.

Ascencio, 17, arrived in July and was welcomed by host parents Tim and Danna McCormick.

Spaens, 18, is living with host parents Trent and Deanna Bourgeois.

The two host families are making sure the students are learning about life in Louisiana.

The teens have visited the Bourgeois’ camp and are enjoying learning about Louisiana culture, said Kimberly Stein, area representative with International Student Exchange.

“My hope and intention is that even after Carolina leaves us, that we would still be positively changed as a family,” Danna McCormick said.

International Student Exchange is a nonprofit organization that finds volunteer host families for exchange students. Applicants must be 25 years old, able to pass a criminal background check and not be receiving any government assistance, Stein said.
