The First United Methodist Church’s Threads of Comfort nondenominational prayer shawl ministry recently delivered its 100th shawl.

Young mothers, the elderly and grieving and sick residents have received the knitted or crocheted shawls since November 2012, a news release from the church said.

“There are times in life when a person needs a good hug,” the release said.

The nondenominational prayer shawl ministry attempts to do that.

One young mother of three toddlers who was pregnant with triplets was given one of the shawls.

They have been given away to people throughout Louisiana, in other states, and even a few internationally, the release said.

Anyone who likes to knit or crochet can participate in creating shawls to share and the group accepts donations of materials.

The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 224 W. Constitution Ave., Gonzales. To help, call (225) 647-4678 or (225) 955-4675.
