Tammy O’Connor, president-elect of the Louisiana Emergency Nurses Association, and Jennifer Sing represented LENA at the National Emergency Nurses Association Day on the Hill, held April 28-29 in Washington, D.C.

More than 100 emergency department nurses from across the nation attended. Delegates were advised to meet with their state’s legislators to lobby for support of mental health reform legislation and trauma care systems, a news release said. Delegates received training on how to present bills and instruction on optimizing time with lawmakers.

O’Connor and Sing met with Sen. Bill Cassidy’s senior public health adviser, Brenda Destro, as well as Sen. David Vitter.

O’Connor and Sing are nurses in the emergency department of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales.

“This was a great experience for both Jennifer and myself, and we look forward to continuing involvement in governmental relations. We encourage other nurses to get involved and be a voice for their practice, their peers, and their patients,” O’Connor said.
