Children from the Geismar community celebrated the end of their summer camp experience July 23 with a dip in the pool at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Robert.
Caring Parents of Geismar summer camp organizer and founder Doris Green said the trip was “a great, fun way to end the camp.”
More than 100 children attended the camp, which was held June 8 through July 23 at the Geismar Community Center.
Green, a retired educator, has been organizing the camp for more than 18 years. Many of her former campers are now bringing their children to the summer program, she said.
Green said she engaged the help of other retired teachers, area professionals and former campers.
“Many come back year after year because they love the kids,” she said.
Green said the camp “keeps me going.”
The camp celebrated the Fourth of July with cake and ice cream and a history lesson on the origins of the holiday.
“We try to make learning fun,” Green said. She said it is important for the children to continue learning during the summer break.
The campers learned about the Boston Tea Party and “had an actual tea party with china cups and saucers.”
Green plans to host the camp again next summer.
