The St. Amant Middle School dance team attended the UDA Louisiana Dance Championship at Southeastern Louisiana University on Jan. 10, competing in hip hop, jazz, pom and solos.
Reagan Calvert placed first, Aries Fournet third, Madelyn Thomassee fourth and Gabbi Wolfe fifth. The team took home second in hip hop and jazz and fourth in pom.
On Jan. 16-17, the team participated in the American All Star Louisiana State Competition in Lafayette. The team came out on top on Jan. 16, which consisted of solos, duets, ensembles and officers. Calvert placed second in lyrical and third in jazz and Fournet placed fourth in jazz.
The St. Amant Middle officers — Wolfe, Haylee Hue, Fournet, Thomassee, Emma Hammond and Madison Smith — placed second. The ensemble of Wolfe, Hue, Fournet, Thomassee, Hammond, Madison Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Kyleigh Hunter, Katie Collins and Ashlyn Vaughn also placed second.
In the duets division, Fournet and Thomassee placed first, Vaughn and Madison Smith placed second and Rose Attuso and Emma Brown placed fifth.
Competition continued Jan. 17 with 19 middle schools from all over the state. In Division III middle school results, St. Amant placed second in jazz and received a technique award; first in pom and received a technique and choreography award; second in hip hop and received a technique and choreography award; and the Sweepstakes Award for having the highest average score.
The team planned to round out the season with a performance at a St. Amant High basketball game and a final performance at the Pelicans game on Feb. 1.
Tryouts will be held March 15-16 for any fifth-graders from Sorrento or St. Amant Primary schools and any sixth- or seventh-graders at St. Amant Middle school.
