The International Association of Assessing Officers recently awarded the Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Award to the Ascension Parish Assessor’s Office and Assessor M.J. “Mert” Smiley.
The award is the highest agency-level recognition given by IAAO. Ascension is the first assessor’s office in Louisiana to win the award, a news release said.
Smiley and Chief Deputy Justin Champlin accepted the award on Sept. 14 at the 81st IAAO Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The award is given to an assessment agency that has instituted a technical, procedural or administrative program that is an improvement over prior programs and is generally recognized as a component of a model assessment system and a contributing factor to equity in property taxation, the release said.
