New head coach Drey Trosclair was selected April 2 to lead the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs with his first head coaching opportunity.
“It’s always been one of my goals to become a head coach, but to reach that at 25 years old, man, I’m really blessed,” Trosclair said.
But the new head coach will have a challenge as only seven starters will return for the 2015-16 season.
Leading the offense this year will be quarterback D.C. Mattingly. His role will be magnified as the offense has changed from the triple option to the spread. Ashton Bourgeois is the returning starter who will anchor the offensive line at left tackle. Returning junior Nick Bellina will shore up the receiving group.
Players to watch on defense include All-District linebacker Cole Amedee, Ashton Bourgeois, Collin Landry, Nick Bellina and Jacob LaGrange.
A couple of other new starters who will be impact players from the start are junior Javon Yarbrough, who will pull double-duty at safety on defense and running back on offense, along with senior Kaleb Winchester, who will play slot receiver on offense and cornerback on defense. What some might see as a lack of age and experience, Trosclair makes up for with enthusiasm and energy. Some of those intangibles will make it to the football field this season as the Ascension Catholic High School Bulldogs take on new challenges.
Three games to watch as the season progresses:
Central Catholic of Morgan City is the first big game for the Bulldogs.
White Castle is their second district contest; it will be important to win this one.
St. John of Plaquemine is another big rivalry game that will help determine how the season goes.
