The Gonzales Rotary Club’s annual Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods on Oct. 24 collected a record amount of canned goods in the Gonzales area.

With help from East Ascension High School’s Interact Club and local Cub Scouts, Rotarians gathered 3,834 pounds of nonperishable food items for the St. Theresa Food Pantry. The club has collected food for the pantry since 1997.

“It’s one of the club’s signature events,” said food pantry manager Anna Sparacino, who chaired this year’s event.

“Many people are unaware of the extent of hunger in our own community. The food pantry serves over 300 families per month, not including Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. These are individuals in our area who struggle to keep enough food stocked in order to feed themselves and their families,” Sparacino said.
