National Service Recognition Day was celebrated April 7 in Ascension Parish, honoring seniors who volunteer with children.

Parish President Tommy Martinez read the proclamation aloud on March 25 at the parish administration building before presenting it to members of the Foster Grandparent Program, a program of the Quad Area Community Action Agency.

The program serves Ascension, East Feliciana, Livingston, St. Helena, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.

Foster Grandparent volunteers assist youths age 18 and younger with education and social development, while helping to improve physical and mental development, a news release said. Volunteers serve 20 hours per week on a one-to-one basis.

Sandra Cavalier, director of the Foster Grandparent Program, said there are 12 volunteers serving in Ascension Parish in the public schools and the Head Start Center.
