St. Amant girls basketball preps for playoffs

Coach Kristy Englade and the No. 26-seeded Lady Gators will open the 5A playoffs on the road with the No. 7 seed, Natchitoches Central.

The Lady Gators finished the year at 16-14 and tied for second in district with Dutchtown. East Ascension and McKinley finished tied for the District 5-5A championship.

The Lady Gators are led by a mixture of veterans and newcomers.

“Our top players include McKenzie Brooks, Kelsey Martine, Megan Melancon, Asya Price, Brooke Romano, Carley Fontenot, Megan Benoit and Amani Gray. That is our rotation and they are athletic and competitive, “ Englade said.

The Lady Gators are in the playoffs for the first time in three years. “We took our lumps with younger players and they are now veterans leading our team,” Englade said.

The Lady Gators play man to man and some zone on defense depending on the matchup.

“We mix our defenses up depending on the scouting report. Our district is very athletic. We run different sets from the flex system, gives us plenty options,” the coach said.

The Lady Gators went through a rough patch early in the season after losing their point guard, McKenzie Brooks, for about six games. “We went 1-5 without Brooks and the girls had to adjust, lost some close games,” Englade said. The Lady Gators rebounded and finished strong down the stretch, including a split with a good Dutchtown team.

The Lady Gators hope a tough pre-district and district schedule will prepare them for a deep playoff run. Check The Advocate Sports for playoff pairings and times.
