Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Gonzales premiered its renovations and new technology at an open house on Oct. 1.
Attendees learned about Agility from Elekta, an advanced cancer treatment system, then toured the facility.
Medical physicist Daniel Neck explained how the integration of Agility with Elekta’s Infinity linear accelerator, or radiation delivery system, sets a new standard for speed and precision in radiation therapy, a news release said.
“Treatment times are even shorter than before, resulting in increased patient comfort and convenience,” Neck said.
The cancer center’s low-dose spiral CT scanner, part of the specialized lung cancer screening program, also was available for viewing. PET/CT technologist Patrick Adams described how the scanner is used in the early detection of lung cancer.
The open house included the announcement of the first Gonzales Gala benefiting the cancer center, set for Jan. 16 at Houmas House Plantation and Gardens in Darrow. Call (225) 215-1208 for more information.
