Registration for the Ascension Parish Library’s Spring Storytime program begins Jan. 20, library officials said.

The program introduces children to letters, words and sounds through a variety of fun-filled programs designed to help foster early literacy skills, a library news release said.

“A child is never too young to learn to read,” the release said. “Research shows that reading to young children from birth significantly increases their chances of thriving in school. It is through the sharing of books and language that young children develop the reading skills needed to be ready to read.”

Beginning in February, the Ascension Parish Library starts its next series of storytime programs for young children. Four types of storytimes are offered based on the needs of the developing child.

Lap-sit Storytime focuses on the needs of babies from birth through crawling. It introduces simple rhymes, songs and books to stimulate babies with rhythmic language and sensory stimuli, the release said. These storytimes are fast-paced and energetic to keep babies amused. A parent or caregiver must attend with their baby. Lap-sit Storytime will be held at 10 a.m. Thursdays from Feb. 5 through March 26 at library branches in Gonzales and Dutchtown.

Toddler Storytime, for children who are walking through age 2, introduces new words and ideas to the learning child through simple books, rhymes and fingerplays, the release said. A parent or caregiver must attend with their child. Toddler Storytime will be at 10 a.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 4 through March 25 at all library locations.

Preschool Storytime, for children 3 to 5, provides 30 minutes of stories, songs, poetry and active play. Preschool children attend these sessions without the assistance of an adult to help foster the preschooler’s growing need for independence, the release said. A preschool child must reach the age of 3 by Feb. 4 in order to participate in this series. Preschool Storytime will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays from Feb. 4 through March 25 in Gonzales, Galvez and Dutchtown.

Bilingual Storytime is for children of all ages who speak Spanish, English or both. These storytimes are an interactive half-hour of stories, songs, and fingerplays at which everything will be read in both English and in Spanish. The program introduces Spanish speakers to the English language and introduces English speakers to the Spanish language. Parents are invited to attend Bilingual Storytime with their children. Bilingual Storytime will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 5, Feb. 19 March 5 and March 19 in Gonzales.

Registration is required for all storytimes and begins on Jan. 20.
