Dutchtown High School cheerleaders raised $9,599.36 during Team Up for St. Jude Spirited by Varsity — Game Day, an ongoing spirit week project to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The Griffin cheer team recruited cheerleaders from Dutchtown Middle and Prairieville Middle schools, and students and fans from Dutchtown High School to raise money to treat and fund research to sideline childhood cancer and other deadly diseases by cheering on the Griffins at the Sept. 12 football game.
The Griffin cheerleaders partnered with Varsity Spirit, a cheerleading and dance team, camps, competitions and apparel company, a news release said.
Fundraising efforts began with Cheerleader Mini Camp in June where all entry fees collected at the show-off were donated to St. Jude. Cheerleaders addressed more than 300 donation letters at UCA camp to mail to friends and family for donations to St. Jude.
Dutchtown High, Dutchtown Middle and Prairieville Middle cheerleaders hosted a Dress Down Day for St. Jude event that collected more than $5,000, the release said.
Griffin cheerleaders also hosted a tailgate party where pizza, drinks and baked goods were sold and drawings were held. Prizes were donated by Beta Club, Student Council, baseball, DECA, track and field, and the Griffin Athletic Booster Club. Donations from junior varsity cheerleaders, varsity cheerleaders, poetry club and football team members finalized the school effort.
“We are thrilled so many students, teachers and fans from all of our Dutchtown family came out to support the kids of St. Jude,” said Jennifer Morrill, varsity cheer sponsor. “Everyone joined together to make Team Up for St. Jude a success and to raise funds that will help the hospital treat and cure children with cancer and other deadly diseases.”
