Fire marshal offerssmoke detectors

It’s not too late to register for a free smoke detector as part of the Louisiana fire marshal’s statewide Operation Save a Life campaign.

Volunteers will be in Donaldsonville on Saturday to install the free smoke alarms and spread the word about the importance of having the devices.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning, who kicked off the program in Ascension Parish last month, said properly installed smoke alarms provide an early warning alarm during fire and can save lives.

On March 2, volunteers installed smoke alarms in Darrow and Sorrento and to date, more than 120 smoke alarms have been installed through the program, a spokesman with the fire marshal’s office has said.

To register for the program, go to and click on the Operation Save a Life section, email, or call (225) 925-4911 or (800) 256-5452.
