Veterans groups are planning Memorial Day observances in Donaldsonville and Gonzales.

The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War Post 3766 of Donaldsonville are hosting a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Friday in Donaldsonville’s Louisiana Square.

A 21-gun salute and program are planned. Jambalaya will be served under the park’s oaks following ceremony.

The American Legion and VFW will join with the Donaldsonville ROTC and local residents to put American Flags on the gravesites of all veterans. The public is invited to participate in both activities.

Ascension Parish Veteran’s Park Association will host an Ascension Parish ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gonzales park on S. Irma Boulevard.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary will serve refreshments and pass out Buddy Poppies to observers. A multi high school choir will lend their voices in song. Local Junior ROTC organizations will be standing sentinel throughout the park.

The local chapter of Rolling Thunder motorcycle riders will stand guard over a coffin symbolizing the fallen soldiers for the duration of program.

Multiple veteran’s groups are expected to participate such as American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veteran’ Association, Women’s Veterans of Louisiana and Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Ascension Parish Veteran’s Park is continuing its veteran brick campaign for current, retired or deceased veterans. The bricks are throughout the park.
