Students in the Ascension Parish ProStart program gained experience in preparing and serving food samples during a school open house in Baton Rouge.

ProStart teacher Traci Martin said four of her students prepared food Aug. 27 for a parent tasting event during University Terrace Elementary School Open House in Baton Rouge.

She said Elizabeth Barrileaux, Madison Jackson, Emily Musselman and Hailey Burgess are part of the parish’s advanced culinary course that focuses on preparing students for a career in the restaurant and hospitality service industry.

She said the parent tasting is a part of the USDA Farm to School Planning Grant awarded to East Baton Rouge Parish schools to explore opportunities to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among elementary students.

She said the students enjoyed taking part in the community service project.

“This opportunity also gives the ProStart students valuable experience, helps build confidence in his/her skills, and provides an opportunity to network with future potential employers in the restaurant and hospitality industry,” she said.
