Ascension Catholic Primary School students can exercise, play games and learn about nutrition, rain or shine, thanks to a new on-campus gym dedicated Friday.

Alumni, students and parents gathered in the Leonce J. Guigou Multi-Purpose Facility and Gym for a blessing by the Rev. Paul Yi and presentations by students.

Guigou, who was born Dec. 15, 1896, in Plattenville and died March 30, 1987, in Donaldsonville, dedicated in his will a trust fund to the school. Some of the funds from the trust were used to construct the gym. Monies donated by the South Louisiana State Fairgrounds Association and other donors also funded the construction.

The 4,300-square-foot building was built by Acadian Construction.

Longtime physical education teacher Dee Lemann said she’s waited for years to have a “gym of our own.”

Lemann said the gym was “a longtime dream that finally came true.”

In addition to space for play and exercise, one corner of the gym is equipped with a television screen and computer equipment to allow for video presentations, Lemann said.

Assistant Principal Sarah Sotile said the school plans to use the facility for open houses and large gatherings.

A committee of volunteers began working on the gym project in 2011.
