Races include state senator for districts 2 and 18; state representative in districts 58, 59, 81 and 88; assessor; clerk of court; coroner; Parish Council; parish president; and sheriff.

The primary election is Oct. 24 and the general election is Nov. 21, if necessary.

School fundraiser planned

R. Rayborn Charter School will hold a fundraiser featuring an Irma Thomas concert Oct. 15 at the Clarion Inn.

The school, now in the planning stages, will give families and children an alternative to traditional education through an arts-integrated approach to learning, a news release said.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a meet and greet with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The concert gets underway at 7:30 p.m. with opening acts by Center Stage Performing Arts Academy.

Sponsorships and VIP and general admission tickets for advance purchase are available. All tickets will be $100 at the door.

Joint replacement class

The Acadians of Maryland

Acadian genealogist R. Martin Guidry will present “A Sojourn Forgotten — The Acadians of Maryland” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales.

Guidry has studied the genealogy and history of the Acadians for over 40 years, with a focus on the culture, language, history and genealogy of the Acadian people from the early 1600s to the present.

The presentation will include a brief history of the Acadians, their lives in Acadia, the events and causes of their deportation, their arrival in late 1755 in Annapolis, Maryland, the difficult life the Acadians had in Maryland and the four expeditions to Louisiana in 1766-1769.

Guidry is the immediate past president of the Board of Directors of the Acadian Memorial Foundation in St. Martinville and continues to serve as a member of its board.
