Relay for Life event slated for Saturday
The Ascension Parish Relay for Life starts at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.
The event, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, includes a car show, Zumba class, 5 p.m. performance by the East Ascension High School jazz band and an opening ceremony at 6 p.m.
More than 30 teams will be selling various foods and items until 3 a.m. Sunday.
Any Given Tuesday will perform at 10:10 p.m. and a womanless beauty pageant is set for 10:30 p.m.

The Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department is hosting an open house Saturday at its station, 16288 Joe Sevario Road, Prairieville.
Firefighters will host demonstrations on vehicle extrications, how to use a fire extinguisher and fire drills from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Food and beverages will be served.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office will be on hand taking applications for its free smoke alarm installation program.
AARP offers class for safe driving
Registration is underway for the AARP Driver Safety Class set for Wednesday at the Gonzales Senior Center.
The Ascension Council on Aging is hosting the four-hour class for residents age 50 and older.
The class costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

Entries sought for garden contest
May 1 is the deadline to enter the LSU Agricultural Center Ascension Parish Home Vegetable Garden Contest for adults and 4-H members.
The contest is held to encourage home vegetable gardeners to produce quality vegetables for home consumption, economic gain, and to improve their knowledge of cultural practices and insect and disease control in the home vegetable garden, LSU horticulture Agent Craig Roussel said.
Gardens will be judged in mid-May.

Summit for teens to address issues
Youths ages 11 to 18 are invited to attend Rise Above Youth Organization’s “Knowledge Ijavonneturner@gmail.com.s Power” teen summit Saturday at the Geismar Community Center.
The summit will address topics and issues youths deal with each day, organizer Regina Thomas said.
“Knowledge Is Power” is the theme for the summit, which is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 12060 La. 73, Geismar.
Topics to be discussed include education, bullying awareness, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, peer pressure, illegal guns, sex education, AIDS awareness and money management, she said.
